Hi everyone,I'm looking for veg. friends from China. I am coming to China this summer. I am from Prague, Czech Republic. I have been vegan for many years and I want to stay vegan when I am in China so I need some help from you. I would like to know what dishes and foods are vegan etc. And I want to find friends too, we talk about veganism and exchange recipes. I hope there is someone here who speaks English, because my Chinese is not very good.

Hi Anna,

Welcome to join us, Welcome to China.

There are a lot people here who can speak English, especially in  some big cities such as Shanghai, Guanzhou,Beijing,Hangzhou ,etc. and there are many vegetarian or Vegan restaurants too.

Could you please tell us which cities of China  you are goning to visit  ?  we can provide you the detailed information about the restaurant address, or find vegan friends to meet you and help you.

I woulk like to say that chinese you wrote above is very good.

Looking forward to getting your further response. Thanks.

Hi Anna,

Welcome to Shanghai. Don't worry about your Chinese. I'm also a vegan. I can tell you and  show you which place is good for you if you come to Shanghai. My English is not excellent, but is just so so.

Please tell me your travel plan for Shanghai earlier.

Have a good trip.

hdh: Thank you, I study Chinese at the university, my major is Chinese studies but I just finished my first year, so I can only say and understand simple things.

We are arriving on August 5th and staying for a month, to Beijing, Chengde, Tianjin, Qingdao, Qufu, Xi'an, and then we are going to travel north through Shanxi, not sure which places yet and then back to Beijing.
I found some restaurants at happycow_net/asia/china/ , but for example Chengde is not even listed there. I also found some tips at vegetarian-china_info so I wonder if that is accurate.
I would like to know things like, what and how to order in a non-veg restaurant. How do I explain I am vegan? I heard meat broth is often a problem. Is it possible to get some street food or snacks that are vegan?I think we'll be trying to get some breakfast from foodcarts on the street. I am wondering which brands of soymilk are vegan, someone told me some soymilks have dairy milk powder in them. We'll be travelling by trains and we've been told it's good to take food like instant noodles because there is hot water, are there any brands that are vegan?
Is there any food you would really recommend I try? What I like about travelling is trying new food. The friends I am going to travel with are not veg., so we'll be separating to go to different restaurants, they do not want to eat at veg restaurants but I want to try as many as I can.
What is the most veg friendly city in China? This upcoming fall/winter I have to choose a university in China where I will spend one or two semesters in 2011/12. I am worried that I'll be staying in dorms and there maybe won't be a kitchen.
I am so excited about coming to China and I am happy to find some Chinese vegans. It is always great to meet people who have the same beliefs. If someone here is from the places we are going to, I would love to meet up for dinner maybe or something like that.

Thank you very much in advance for any advice you can give me,

Anna

Hi Anna,

If you are a strict Vegan, I recommend that you go to Vegan resraurants to have your meals becasue most non-vegan restaurants in China can not provide strict vegan food.  Beijing and Shanghai should be the most  friendly vegan cities, and there are many vegans and vegan restaurants there . Some universities already opened vegetarian  windows in their mess halls, such as Fudan university in Shanghai and Bejing university of Beijing.

so when you choose university to learn Chinese you can ask the question about if there is vegan food windows in the campus. But if  you choose an university  in Shanghia or Bejing, you will never worry about that because there are  a lot of vegetarian restaurants outside too.

As for the vegetarian restairants in China, you also check Chinavegan.com to find some in different provinces and cities. You can use the follwowing website address:

http://chinavegan.com/yellowpage.htm

and then click  different cities or provinces in the left side to enter into  and pick published recently someone  to check the contact information.  You can have a  call and ask them  in Chinese: 你那里是素食馆吗? 几点开门? 几点关门?有面条吗? 有哪些菜? 坐几路车可以到你那里? 在那一站下车? 等等。  The good news is that  you can speak simple Chinese.  You can learn and practice some simple Chinese sentences in advance  and write them down, which you possibly need during your staying in China. Have a fun!

Also, don't worry vegan foods , like vegan instant noodles,  soymilk etc, there are many brands to choose, and  you definitely find the vegan foods in China by checking the ingredients.  If  you travel to small cities, you can prepare some vegan food in advance and sometime you also find the vegan food in the street food boothes.

If you like, you can leave your email address here for someone who would like to help you to contact you, like Ningning from Shanghai who have given you a  reply in the second floor.

Chat next time.
